Current completion status of the A9 motorway

Federal Roads Office

Key facts

The federal government has been responsible for motorways since 2008. Within the framework of network completion, individual sections are completed together with the cantons as a joint task, whereby the cantons are responsible for implementation. In the canton of Valais, the Dienststelle für Nationalstrassenbau (DNSB; Motorway Construction Unit), representing the canton of Valais, is building the missing sections of the A9 as project owner. 96% of the costs are borne by the federal government. The Federal Roads Office (FEDRO) is responsible for overall supervision and steering. The DNSB has budgeted CHF 5.15 billion (as at 2024) for the 31.8km stretch between Sierre East and Visp East. The final section between Sierre and Leuk East is to be completed by 2037 and handed over to FEDRO. It is 8.5km long and will cost CHF 1.477 billion.

As part of this audit, the Swiss Federal Audit Office (SFAO) assessed the current completion status of the A9 motorway. The findings indicate favourable developments in the cooperation between FEDRO and the DNSB. However, the risks remain considerable, particularly with regard to the large construction volume still outstand-ing and the long construction period. The SFAO sees a need for action with regard to ensuring continued overall supervision, as well as risk and cost management.
