News - Transparency in political funding

Two proposals will be put to the vote on 27 September 2026: the popular initiative ‘Safeguard Swiss neutrality (Neutrality Initiative)’ and the popular initiative ‘For food security – through increased sustainable domestic production, more plant-based food and clean drinking water (Food Initiative)’. Campaigners who spend more than CHF 50 000 must disclose their funding. The Swiss Federal Audit Office (SFAO) publishes the data reported by the campaigners no later than 30 days before the federal popular vote.

By 28 August 2026, an estimated total volume of CHF 7.86 million had been disclosed for both proposals. This total volume may include double counts (see below). CHF 5.51 million were reported for the proposal ‘Neutrality Initiative’ whereas CHF 2.35 million were reported for the ‘Food Initiative’. The budgeted receipts are published in detail in the SFAO’s electronic reporting register.

The political actors are responsible for the accuracy of the information published.

Why is it not always possible to add together the disclosed amounts for individual campaigns?

If the criteria for a joint campaign are not met, each political actor discloses their individual campaign. In such cases, the same funds may sometimes be disclosed by different actors. If, for example, a campaigning organisation decides to provide funds from its campaign to another campaigning organisation, the receipts in question are correctly reported twice: once as own funds and once as a benefit.
