In 2008, Competition Commission (COMCO) launched a project to reduce its reliance on reports from third parties (whistleblowers, third-party denunciations, etc.) by developing a detection method based on statistical tools. Since 2023, the method has combined traditional statistical tools with machine learning technologies, i.e. artificial intelligence (AI). At present, it can only be used to detect cartels linked to the construction market (construction services). The initial results are positive and have confirmed the appropriateness of using this technology at COMCO.
The Swiss Federal Audit Office examined the vision and strategy for the use of AI at COMCO, as well as aspects relating to the profitability, reliability and IT management of the current system.
