Integration of the Coordinated Medical Services

Federal Office for Civil Protection

Key facts

The Coordinated Medical Services (CMS), founded in the 1960s, play a key role in cooperation and coordination in the case of nationwide medical interventions in crisis situations. Initially attached to the Defence Group, the CMS underwent a major reform in 2023, when it became part of the Federal Office for Civil Protection (FOCP). In order to be able to fully perform its tasks, six full-time equivalents (FTEs) were allocated as part of this reorganisation, including one for the delegate, and an annual budget of CHF 1.7 million was made available.

The main task of the new CMS delegate, who took up the position in 2023, was to revitalise the area by adapting its role to the current needs of the population and civil public health. This strategic development led to a reorientation, approved by the Federal Council in August 2025. It was accompanied by a change of name: the CMS officially became the National Network for Disaster Medicine (KATAMED).
